Snowmobiling can be a very relaxing and enjoyable sport. Unfortunately every year there are lives lost needlessly in accidents were ever snow and ice may be. Caution on hidden corners and unfamiliar areas should be heeded without doubt. The OFSC does their best to ensure enjoyment and safety on the trails. The rest is up to us, the riders who ask for the trails.
Many lives have been lost to one of the most dangerous areas of a sledder, ice. Mother Nature has not been kind enough to give us deep cold temperatures long enough to make all ice conditions safe. Riding on ice should only be done in marked areas by the OFSC and ice riding avoided at night as you just never know what is beyond your headlight.
Some feel they are invincible or use the phrase “I have been living around here since…”. Could it be arrogance or ignorance? Only those who disappear under the frozen waters will ever know the answer. May god have mercy on those he takes and on the families left behind in sorrow.
OFSC trail conditions can be found at http://www.ofsc.on.ca/Trails/trails.asp . Click on the area of the map you wish to find out information for your area of choice. For weather updates and storms go to http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/on-151_metric_e.html . The posted area can be changed to the area of choice for your riding pleasure.
For the safety of everyone, please ride safe. It’s everyone’s responsibility.
