Checking For Leaks Around Hot Tub Fittings

Some leaks may occur around fittings in a hot tub as silicone is used as a sealant. The leak usually occurs because the silicone has nothing to stick too. Shiny surfaces do not allow for adherence of silicone. I suggest a slight sanding around the immediate fitting hole if this type of repair is required.

One of the easiest ways to see of there is a leak is by using red dye. The dye we are going to use is the phenol red that is in your water test kit used for testing of ph. Once the red phenol is used for this test it can not longer be used for water testing in your kit and must be replaced. It will be diluted with spa water.

Carefully place the red dye in the water upside down with the cap on. Remove the cap while upside down so water does not get in and dilute the dye. A kid’s cheap snorkeling mask would be an asset so can watch under water as you work. This will allow you to see your working area clearly.

The idea is to stay as still as possible or move slowly as possible to prevent currents in the water. Currents will move the dye around and prevent your chances of finding the leak.

Slowly squeeze a tiny bit of the dye around the area you suspect is leaking. If a leak is present, you will see the dye being drawn into the leak giving you confirmation one is present. There may be more than one leak present, so check all fittings very carefully.
